Police have arrested a 15-year-old youth for his suspected involvement in a series of loanshark harassment cases.

On 3 April 2015, Police received a report on loanshark harrassment whereby the front door of a residential HDB unit at Woodlands Street 82 was set on fire. Through extensive ground enquiries and viewing of images from Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Jurong Police Division arrested a 15-year-old youth at Block 351 Tampines Street 33 on 6 April 2015 at about 4.30pm. He is believed to be involved in other similar cases.

The youth will be charged in the Courts on 8 April 2015. Under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to 5 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.

Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment. Those who deliberately vandalise properties will be arrested swiftly and dealt with severely in accordance with the law. Upon conviction, these perpetrators can expect to be caned and jailed for damaging property and causing alarm to the general community. No effort will be spared to nab them to face the full consequences of their misdeeds regardless of their age.
