Launch Of The Singapore Road Safety Month 2015 And Roadpro Mobile App

The Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC) and Traffic Police Department (TP) launched the Singapore Road Safety Month (SRSM) 2015 and “RoadPro” mobile application at Marina Bay Sands on Saturday 9 May 2015. Associate Professor Mr Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Transport graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour.

2.         The SRSM, which is into its third year, is part of the “Safer Roads Singapore” action plan to foster a culture of safe and courteous road use. This year’s road safety activities are focused on promoting a culture of road safety amongst the young.

3.          In line with the United Nation’s Road Safety Week theme of children and road safety, SRSM 2015 focuses on creating an environment of safer roads for children. The carnival-themed event, which runs for a total of two days, has 9 booths and 2 road safety circuits with activities for visitors that aim to reinforce road safety messages in a fun and interesting manner. One of the key components at SRSM 2015 is a booth by the Automobile Association of Singapore, where road users can make an online pledge (#SaveKidsLife) to create a safe road environment for children all over the world. “Use Your RoadSense” Movement and “RoadPro” mobile application

4.         TP had recently launched the “Use Your RoadSense” movement to shape the behaviour and practices of various groups of road-users. This movement is a new, innovative approach to road safety education and engagement, and leverages conversations and collaborations with all road user groups to build and sustain a shared culture of safe road use. The first dialogue session for the “Use Your RoadSense” movement was held in early April 2015. 5.         In conjunction with the movement, TP launched the “RoadPro” mobile application, which allows users to understand what type of road user they are. There are eight road-user profiles and users have to answer several questions before the application will determine their road user profile. Based on this profile analysis, the game will provide users with suitable suggestions on road safety and how they can become a safer road user. TP hopes that the individualised profile will spark self-reflection among road-users on their own behaviour, and encourage them to become safer road-users.

6.          There are also mini games in the application which allows the player to take on the roles of a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist. During the game, the player will encounter different scenarios and points will be awarded or deducted based on the actions performed by the player. The “RoadPro” mobile application is now available for free download on the Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.

Singapore Road Safety Awards

7.         Vocational road users also have their part to play in creating a safe road environment. During the launch event, the Singapore Road Safety Awards were presented to companies and individuals for displaying and championing exemplary road safety practices. The winners have adhered to the road safety performance criteria set by SRSC and have stood out from the rest of their competitors. These winning companies have in place good road safety policies, vehicle management systems, and training and awareness programs to promote safe driving. Good road safety practices include having regular inspections to check for the tampering speed limiters and taking initiatives to install tools that help drivers look out for blind spots As for winners of the individual awards, they are shining examples of what a safe driver should be. Being good role models to their peers, they have maintained zero traffic accident and violation records.

1. Road Safety Award for Companies with Heavy  Vehicle Fleet (ULW>5000kg)

2. Road Safety Award for Companies with Bus Fleet (19-seater and above)*

3. Road Safety Award for Safe Driver (Vocational Licence)*

4. Road Safety Award for Most Improved Driver (Vocational Licence)*

    

   * These are new categories for those holding vocational driving licences.

    

   8.          Both SRSC and TP hope these efforts and initiatives will inspire more industry players and road users, to be role models and ambassadors of road safety. SRSC and TP will continue to engage the community and partners of road safety on ways and means to reduce the needless loss of lives on the roads from traffic accidents. Road safety has always been a shared responsibility, and everyone must practice “RoadSense” and do their part to ensure safer roads for all.

Road Safety Video for Children

Last year, Volvo Trucks Singapore, together with SRSC and TP produced an educational road safety video for heavy vehicle drivers as part of the children road safety programme “Safety at Eye Level”, launched during SRSM 2014. This year, an educational video on road safety has been produced for children to educate them on the importance of using the kerb drill and making eye contact with motorists when crossing the roads. The video will be available in both English and Mandarin. It will be distributed to 160 primary schools and 152 secondary schools as part of their education curriculum on road safety.

About the Singapore Road Safety Council

The Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC) was set up on 9 December 2009 by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), supported by the Ministry of Transport (MOT), Land Transport Authority (LTA) and other road safety-related stakeholders.

The Council is self-funded through sponsorships and donations, and is registered as an official entity with the Registry of Societies (ROS). The Council is also granted ‘Charity’ and ‘Institutions of Public Character (IPC)’ status for purposes of managing the sponsorship funds and donations.

The key objectives of the Council are as follows:

1. Foster closer cooperation among local authorities and agencies for a holistic approach in all road accident prevention activities, particularly through campaigns, training and public education;

    

1. Serve as the official body for Singapore to engage with other international road safety councils and programmes in contribution to global road safety outcomes; and

    

1. Serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas on matters pertaining to road safety.
