Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 21 May 2015, Police received a report of loanshark harassment at Blk 8 Jalan Kukoh, which was splashed with paint. Loanshark-related graffiti was also found around the area. Upon receiving the report, officers from Bukit Merah East Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) carried out extensive probes. With the aid of Police Cameras (POLCAM) mounted in the vicinity of the incident location, the officers managed to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him at Canberra Road on 2 Jun 2015 at about 9.00 pm.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in several cases of loanshark harassment by splashing paint at debtors’ houses and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti at various locations islandwide. Two mobile phones and a red marker pen believed to be used in the commission of the offences were seized as case exhibits.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 4 June 2015. Under the Moneylenders Act  (Revised Edition), first-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to 5 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.
