Police have arrested a 27-year-old man believed to be involved in a series of extortion cases.
On 2 June 2015, a 25-year-old victim lodged a police report informing that the suspect, whom she befriended in 2014, demanded for money in exchange for not posting compromising videos of her online. Out of fear, the victim transferred $14,000 to several bank accounts provided by the suspect over a period of nine months. Upon receiving the report, officers from the Central Police Division conducted investigations to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him at Depot Road following an operation on 3 June 2015 at about 10.30pm
The suspect will be charged for an offence of Extortion under Section 385 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 on 5 June 2015. If convicted, he may be punished with imprisonment for a term of not less than 2 years and not more than to 10 years and with caning.
