Police have arrested a 27-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man, who are believed to be involved in at least 6 reported cases of cheating.

2          Since September 2014, Police had received several reports of cheating where victims informed that they were duped into paying for mobile phones but had received packaged boxes containing metal plates instead. In all the reported cases, the victims had come across online advertisements selling mobile phones and had arranged to meet up with the seller to carry out the transactions. During the meet up, the female suspect would hand over a sealed packaged box purportedly containing the mobile phone and collect the payment from the victim before leaving the location. The unsuspecting victim would later discover that the box contained metal plates instead of the promised mobile phone.

3          Through protracted investigations, officers from the Clementi Division managed to establish the identities of the two suspects and arrested them on 18 June 2015 at about 2.50 pm in Woodlands. Several empty mobile phone boxes and 5 metal plates were seized as case exhibits.

4          Both suspects will be charged in Court on 20 June 2015 for the offence of Cheating with Common Intention under Section 420 Read With Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment which may extend to 10 years and shall also liable to a fine.
