Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment.
2 On 18 June 2015 at 2.59 pm, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division were performing anti-crime patrol when they observed the suspect behaving suspiciously along Hougang Ave 4. A check was conducted and loanshark paraphernalia such as notes containing debtors’ addresses, 3 markers and a handphone were found on the suspect. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have committed loanshark harassment island wide at the vicinities of Yishun, Hougang, Marine Terrence, Ang Mo Kio, Circuit Road, Ubi Ave, Toa Payoh, Aljunied and Whampoa by scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls of HDB blocks.
3 The suspect will be charged in Court on 20 June 2015 for loanshark harassment under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010). First-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to five years and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.
