Police have arrested a 34-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of loanshark harassment cases.
Acting on information received, officers from the Clementi Division arrested the man for his alleged involvement in loansharking activities on 9 July 2015 at about 8.50 pm. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be a debtor-turned-harasser, who assisted a loanshark syndicate to carry out harassment acts by splashing paint on the main doors of debtors’ residences, and scribbling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls outside debtors’ units in housing estates such as Jurong East, Jurong West, Woodlands, Bukit Batok, Ang Mo Kio, Hougang and Bedok. Two tins of paint, a box of polyethylene gloves, one marker pen, a mobile phone and a stack of plastic bags were seized as case exhibits.
The suspect will be charged in Court 26 on 10 July 2015 at 9 am. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to 5 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.
