Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for Voluntarily Causing Hurt to a Police officer.

On 15 September 2015 at about 3.20am, Police received a call for assistance from a taxi driver along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3. Upon arrival, a 27-year-old man was found sleeping in the taxi. When awakened by officers, he started to hurl vulgarities against them. Despite repeated warnings to stop, the man persisted and assaulted one of the officers. He was subsequently arrested.

The suspect will be charged at the State Courts on 16 September 2015 for the offence of Voluntarily Causing Hurt to deter public servant from his duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 and Insulting Public Servant offence under Section 6(1)(a) of the Protection from Harassment Act, Chapter 256A.

A person convicted for causing hurt to a public servant faces imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years, a fine, caning, or with any combination of such punishments. A person convicted for insulting a public servant may be sentenced to imprisonment for a term which may extend to 12 months, a fine not exceeding S$5,000 or both.
