Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion for impersonating a Public Servant.

On 18 October 2015 at about 4.56am, a member of public reported to the Police that a man at Block 466 Jurong West Street 41, had identified himself to the public as a Police Officer from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and demanded that they hand over their identity cards and belongings for checks. Acting on the information received, officers from the Jurong West Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) swiftly established the identity of the man and arrested him near Block 458 Jurong West Street 41 on the same day. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have approached a group of youths and identified himself as a CID officer to conduct checks on their identity cards and belongings.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 19 October 2015 for the offence of Impersonating a Public Servant under Section 170 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries a jail term which may extend to 2 years, or with a fine, or both.

Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant and wary of persons who may impersonate as Police Officers to facilitate the commission of their criminal acts. If in doubt, they should request for the Police Officer's Warrant Card to verify his identity before complying with the instructions of the officer. A genuine warrant card will have identification features such as the Police crest, the photo of the officer, his name and NRIC number. If they are still unsure of the person's credibility as a Police Officer, they should call 999 for assistance.
