Back to its roots

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) Band celebrated its 90th anniversary earlier this afternoon with a free public concert at the Botanical Gardens Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage. Titled A March to Remember, the crowd was treated to an afternoon of marches to celebrate the SPF Band’s roots as a military band.

Established in 1925, the SPF Band was formed to provide music for state events, parades and the public. Through the years, the Band has grown in size and stature, spreading the SPF's good name locally and internationally.

Kicking off the concert with a fanfare titled ‘Metamorphosis, composed by Head Music Development, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sulaiman Abdul Wahab, the band then treated the crowd with popular marches such as ‘Mercury, ‘Colonel Bogey March and Sousa.

SPF Combined Band

A SPF Combined Band performance is never complete without the Women Police Pipes & Drums (WPPD) and the Gurkha Contingent Pipes & Drums (GCPD). Their unique collaboration and mesmerising sounds of bagpipes in a lush green surrounding captivated the audience. Together, the SPF Combined Band presented, The Four Tenors, an original composition by Director of Music, Superintendent of Police, Amri Amin and percussionist Staff Sergeant Radin Muhammad Rithduan.

Social Media Hits

The afternoon also saw surprise performances by the Dixieland Band, one of the SPF Band's ensembles, and Special Constabulary Corporal (SC/Cpl) Lewis Loh. The Dixieland Band became popular in 2014 with their performance of Orang Singapura featured on SPF Facebook while SC/Cpl Lewis rendition of National Day Song One Singapore went viral earlier in August this year. At the concert, both the Dixieland Band and SC/Cpl Lewis performed the instrumental and vocal versions of When the Saints Go Marching In and O When the Saints.

Finale

As sunset approached, the SPF band played its final piece, Abide with Me and Sunset, marking the end of the concert.
