In a 12-hour operation against a loanshark syndicate conducted on 2 December 2015, (the) Police arrested six men and one woman, aged between 33 and 70, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

Following extensive ground enquiries, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Police Intelligence Department (PID) conducted simultaneous raids at multiple locations island-wide to effect the arrests. During the operation, cash amounting to about $16,500/-, mobile phones, laptops, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, internet banking dongles and bank transaction slips were seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations also revealed that the syndicate is believed to be responsible for at least 30 loanshark harassment cases island-wide.

All the suspects will be charged in Court on 4 December 2015 for offences under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010).

Acting Director of the CID, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sekher Warrier, commended the officers for the successful operation. He said, “Police are determined to continue clamping down hard on loanshark syndicates and we will ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.”
