From 1 January 2016, motorists holding Class 4, Class 4A or Class 5 driving licences (“heavy vehicle drivers”) will be able to continue driving heavy vehicles under these classes until they turn 75 years old, if they pass an enhanced medical examination and proficiency driving test. This is an increase from the current upper age limit of 70 years old.
With the revision, heavy vehicle drivers, aged between 70 to 74 years old, can retain their licences if they pass an annual enhanced medical examination and proficiency driving test. The current requirement for heavy vehicle drivers, aged between 65 to 69 years old, to pass an annual medical examination and proficiency driving test conducted by the Traffic Police (TP) remains.
This increase follows a review by TP, which found that fit and able senior heavy vehicle drivers are competent to handle heavy vehicles. The review included overseas benchmarking, consultation with medical practitioners and TP’s assessment of the driving competency of senior drivers. The annual enhanced medical examination and proficiency test will ensure that the senior heavy vehicle drivers are certified fit to drive.
Table 1 below summarises the key requirements for the renewal of Class 4, Class 4A and Class 5 driving licences for motorists aged 65 years and above.
