Two Men Arrested For Suspected Involvement In Loansharking Activities

The Police have arrested two 22-year-old men for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 10 January 2016 at about 6.45am, the victim returned to her home at McNair Road and discovered that the shoe rack outside her unit had been set ablaze. She immediately called the police for assistance.

Through follow up investigations, officers from Central Division managed to establish the identities of the two suspects involved and arrested them on 11 January 2016 at Marina Boulevard and Pasir Ris Drive 10 respectively. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to have committed loanshark harassments by setting fire and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls of HDB blocks along McNair Road. Two handphones, a can of spray paint, a bottle of lighter fluid and a bicycle lock as well as several marker pens were seized as case exhibits.

Both suspects will be charged in Court on 12 January 2016 with an offence of loanshark harassment. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.
