A 23-year-old man attacked a police officer with a knife yesterday, causing the officer to sustain a deep slash wound on his right arm. The man has been arrested for the offence of Voluntarily Causing Hurt by Dangerous Weapon.

On 10 March 2016, the Police received a complaint under the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act (CMCA). Following up on the report lodged, three plainclothes police officers from the Technology Crime Investigation Branch (TCIB) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) mounted an operation at a residence along Geylang East Avenue 1. On the same day at about 9.45pm, the police officers spotted the suspect and identified themselves while approaching him. The suspect then brandished a knife and attacked the officers. As a result of the attack, a 43-year-old police officer sustained a deep slash wound to his right arm. The three officers, however, reacted swiftly and subdued the suspect. He was subsequently placed under arrest. The injured officer was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and is currently warded, where his condition is described as stable.

The knife used in the attack was recovered and seized as a case exhibit. A search of the suspect’s residence also uncovered items which are suspected to be drug paraphernalia and controlled drugs. These drug-related items have been referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for follow-up investigations.

The 23-year-old suspect will be charged in Court on 12 March 2016 with the offence of Voluntarily Causing Hurt by a Dangerous Weapon. Upon conviction, the person may be sentenced to imprisonment for up to seven years, or fine or caning or any combination of such punishment.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations & Intelligence) concurrent Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Tan Chye Hee said, “While policing is a profession not without its risks and hazards, the Police have zero tolerance towards such acts of violence towards Police officers or public servants who are carrying out their duties. The Police will not hesitate to take stern action against those who blatantly disregard the law and harm police officers. We will see to it that they are dealt with to the fullest extent of our laws.”
