The Police have arrested three men aged between 28 and 31 for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

 

On 9 March 2016, the Police received a report that the gate of a residential unit at Admiralty Drive had been locked by a bicycle lock. Loanshark related graffiti was also scribbled on the wall. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Ang Mo Kio Division arrested the 28-year-old suspect at Jurong West Street 73 on 10 March 2016. Following the arrest, two other male suspects, believed to be involved in the case, were subsequently arrested on the same day at Choa Chu Kang Crescent. Preliminary investigations revealed that they were believed to have committed similar act of loanshark harassments at Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang, Yishun, Ang Mo Kio and Punggol.

 

Two of the suspects will be charged in Court on 12 March 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes. Investigations against the remaining 28-year-old suspect are ongoing.
