In a ceremony held at Jurong Division today, a member of the public was commended for his public spiritedness. With his assistance, the Police have arrested a 26-year-old man for a case of outraging the modesty of a woman at Causeway Point.

On 11 August 2016 at about 7.15 pm, a 47-year-old woman was walking around Causeway Point when the suspect molested her. A civic-minded member of the public, Mr Yu Seng Ann, who witnessed the act of molest, noticed the woman in distress and detained the suspect. The Police then arrested the suspect after being alerted of the incident.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 13 August 2016 with the offence of Outrage of Modesty under Section 354(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries an imprisonment term of up to 2 years, or with fine, or with caning, or with any combination of such punishments.

Commander of Jurong Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Koh Wei Keong, commended Mr Yu Seng Ann for assisting in the arrest. He said, “This case illustrates the close partnership between the Police and the Community in fighting crime. Mr Yu has played an important role in the arrest, and his selflessness and public-spiritedness is indeed commendable.”

The Police would like to remind members of public to stay vigilant of their surroundings and take the following precautions:

a.    Be wary of strangers who approach you in crowded areas;

b.    Stay close to your friends or move around in groups when in crowded places;

c.    Be aware and alert of your surroundings. If someone stands exceptionally close to you, or if you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to a crowded area or call the Police for assistance;

d.    Avoid taking short-cuts through dark and deserted places. Keep to well-lit areas where there are more people and traffic;

e.    Do not enter the lift with a stranger. Let the stranger take the lift and wait for the next one;

f.     Where possible, do not nap whilst travelling on public transport;

g.    When coming home late at night, get someone to escort you home; and

h.    If you are molested, shout for help immediately or activate your shrill alarm. Call ‘999’ quickly.
