The Police have arrested three men aged between 34 and 40, for their suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases.

On 7 October 2016, the Police received a report on cases of cheating involving the pawning of fake gold bangles and chains. Officers from Ang Mo Kio Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and they managed to establish the identities of the three suspects, who were subsequently arrested. Cash amounting to S$5,350/- and some fake gold bangles and chains were seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations revealed that the three men are believed to be involved in several similar cases of cheating at pawnshops islandwide.

The three suspects will be charged in Court on 10 October 2016 with the offence of Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which is punishable on conviction with an imprisonment term of not more than 10 years and shall also be liable to a fine.

The Police would like to advise pawnshop owners to be vigilant against similar ruses, and to check and verify the identities of individuals who pawn items at their business premises, including their guarantors. Pawnshop owners are also encouraged to carry out detailed examinations of the items to be pawned before making any transactions.
