The Police have arrested two men, aged 30 and 27 for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.

 

In the first case, between 1 and 18 April 2017, there were several cases of loanshark harassment cases at Pasir Ris, Ang Mo Kio, Serangoon, Yishun, Choa Chu Kang and Shunfu areas. The HDB residential units were splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti were also scribbled on the walls. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Bedok Police Division managed to establish the identity of the 30-year-old suspect and arrested him along Serangoon Road. Two mobile phones, debtors' records, two markers and two plastic bottles containing paint were seized as case exhibits.

 

In the second case, on 18 April 2017, there were two cases of loanshark harassment cases at Bedok area. The HDB residential units were splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti were scribbled on the walls. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the 27-year-old suspect and arrested him along Bedok North Ave 2. One mobile phone, debtors' records and one marker were seized as case exhibits.  

 

The two suspects will be charged in Court on 21 April 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years, and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
