The Police are investigating a 24-year-old man who is believed to have lodged a false report.

On 16 April 2017 at about 9.38 pm, the man lodged a police report, alleging that he was attacked and robbed by an unknown assailant. He also claimed that cash amounting to $12 were taken away by the assailant.

Officers from Tanglin Division conducted probes and detected many inconsistencies during the course of investigation. It was eventually established that he had provided false information to the Police.

Investigations against the man is ongoing. Anyone convicted of giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or a fine which may extend to $5000, or with both.

The Police would like to remind the public that Police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false Police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
