The Police have arrested a 59-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loanshark harassment activities.

Between April 2017 and early May 2017, there were several reported cases of loanshark harassment at Bedok South, Tampines, Yishun, Punggol and Sembawang housing estates. The residential units were splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti were found scribbled on the walls outside the units. One of the units’ front gate was also chained with a U-lock. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Bedok Police Division managed to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him along Lorong 5 Toa Payoh on 3 May 2017. One black chalk and one bottle containing white paint were seized as case exhibits.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 5 May 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years, and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
