Close to 300 participants from international schools, recreational and sports clubs and dormitories, attended the Safety & Security Watch Group (SSWG) counter-terrorism seminar held at Hwa Chong Institution on Thursday, 8 June 2017. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Lau Peet Meng, was the Guest-of-Honour at the event.

This is the eleventh in a series of counter-terrorism seminars organised by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for various industries under the ambit of SGSecure. The inaugural seminar was held for the Retail Industry on 18 July 2016.

During the seminar, participants were informed on how to remain vigilant, detect threats, and look out for tell-tale indicators for suspicious persons and vehicles. This is timely amidst the change in tactics adopted by terror groups, such as the vehicle and a knife attacks at London Bridge last weekend.

Participants were also updated on the security situation by speakers from the Home Team. They were also trained on what they could do to enhance the safety and security of their premises, and critical emergency response skills to better manage and handle security-related situations.

Support from our SSWG members

Members of the Safety and Security Watch Group have been proactive in adopting robust measures to keep their premises safe and secure through timely review of contingency plans and validation of these plans through regular exercises.

The Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) has been working closely with the SPF and SCDF in raising awareness and stepping up emergency response measures in the event of a terror attack.

“As Asia’s leading leisure destination, our priority is to ensure a safe and secure environment for all guests to have fun. We place great importance on emergency preparedness and have put in place a robust resilience framework, with regular drills and exercises to ensure that all our staff are familiar with crisis response plans and their roles. These efforts include equipping our frontliners and island stakeholders with skills to provide first-aid and operate automated external defibrillators, as well as training to identify and handle suspicious behaviours. As part of this coordinated approach, we also work closely with our partners such as the Singapore Police Force, Singapore Civil Defence Force and other state agencies, and we stand ready to respond swiftly and effectively to incidents and emergencies.”
