The Police have arrested three women aged between 21 and 24, for their suspected involvement in loanshark harassment activities.

Between 13 and 14 June 2017, the Police received many reported cases of loanshark harassments island-wide, whereby victims’ cars were sprayed with red paint and debtor notes were left on their vehicles.

Following the reports, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Bedok Police Division worked relentlessly round-the-clock to carry out extensive investigative probes and ground enquiries. The officers’ efforts subsequently paid off when the identity of one of the suspects was established with the aid of footages from Police Cameras (POLCAM).

Following up on this lead, officers mounted an operation and arrested the first suspect along Paya Lebar Road on 15 June 2017. Officers then established the identities of the two other accomplices and swiftly placed them under arrest at 83 Punggol Central on the same day.

All three suspects would be charged in Court on 17 June 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.

Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment. Those who deliberately vandalise properties will be arrested swiftly and dealt with severely in accordance with the law. Upon conviction, these perpetrators can expect to be caned and jailed for damaging property and causing alarm to the general community. No effort will be spared to nab them to face the full consequences of their misdeeds regardless of their age.
