The Police have arrested a 34-year-old man for his suspected involvement in online sales of counterfeit luxury watches and watch accessories.
In a 13-hour operation mounted on 16 August 2017, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted raid at Beach Road against the sale of counterfeit luxury watches and watch accessories, resulting in the arrest. During the operation, a total of 1,102 pieces of trademark infringing goods such as watches and watch accessories including straps and buckles, with an estimated street value of about S$53,000 were seized. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had used e-commerce platforms to order these counterfeit goods from foreign sources, before reselling them locally via a social platform.
Investigations against the man are ongoing.
The Police take a serious view of intellectual property right (IPR) infringements and will not hesitate to take action against perpetrators who show a blatant disregard for our laws. With the growth of e-commerce and social platforms, members of the public are advised to be careful of counterfeit goods being sold on such platforms.
Persons found guilty of selling or distributing goods with falsely applied trademark may be fined up to a maximum of $100,000, or an imprisonment term which may extend to five years, or both.
