The Police have arrested a 23-year-old manfor his suspected involvement in loanshark harassment activities.

 

Between September and October 2017, the Police received several reports of loanshark harassment at Bedok, Tampines, Hougang, Sengkang, Ang Mo Kio, Jurong, Woodlands and Bukit Merah areas. The HDB residential units were splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti were also scribbled on the walls. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Bedok Police Division and Clementi Police Division managed to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him on 12 October 2017. Fourteen cans of paint, one black marker and one handphone with debtor’s records were seized as case exhibits.

 

The suspect will be charged in Court on 13 October 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years, and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
