Traffic and Crime Advisory for Deepavali Celebrations in Little India

Large crowds are expected in Little India on the eve of Deepavali on 17 October 2017 and heavy vehicular traffic is expected along Serangoon Road.

 

To facilitate the bazaar along Birch Road, Birch Road (between Serangoon Road and Farrer Park Station Road) and Burmah Road will be closed from 5.00pm on 17 October 2017 to 4.00 am on 18 October 2017. During the road closures, access will only be granted to police and emergency vehicles. Auxiliary Police officers will be deployed along the affected roads and junctions to regulate traffic and assist motorists. Motorists are advised to avoid the affected roads, make alternative travel arrangements and drive with caution. Strict enforcement action will also be taken against illegal parking.

 

The Police would like to advise the public to remain vigilant against crime by adopting the following measures:

 

    • Look after your belongings at all times;

    • Be cautious of strangers when approached;

    • Stay close to your friends or move around in groups;

    • If you are molested, call for help immediately by shouting or seek help from people nearby to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit. Call ‘999’ as soon as possible.

    • Report any suspicious persons and activities to the Police by calling 999 or SMS to 71999 if it is unsafe to talk; and

    • Dial ‘999’ for urgent assistance.

    • Do not set off improvised fireworks such as the bundling of sparklers. Anyone caught setting off improvised fireworks may be prosecuted in Court for an offence of negligent conduct with respect to any explosive substance under Section 286 of the Penal Code Chapter 224.  If convicted, the offender will be liable to an imprisonment term which may extend to one year or fine up to S$5,000, or with both. Should the act lead to any hurt caused, one may be liable to prosecution for voluntarily causing hurt with heated or explosive substances under Section 324 of the Penal Code. If convicted, the offender will be liable to an imprisonment term which may extend to 7 years, or with fine, or with caning, or with any combination of such punishments.
