The Police have arrested three men, aged between 15 and 26, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.
In the first case, on 10 November 2017 at about 2.02pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at Blk 367 Tampines St 34. The gate of a residential unit had been locked with a bicycle lock and loanshark-related graffiti were also scrawled on the walls. Through extensive ground enquiries, the 26-year-old suspect was arrested by officers from Tanglin Police Division on 13 November 2017. The suspect is believed to have committed similar acts of harassment at Sims Drive and Upper Changi Road.
In the second case, on 13 November 2017 at about 8.30 pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at Blk 422 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4. The door of a residential unit was set on fire. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of footages from Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Jurong Police Division arrested the suspects, aged 15 and 16, on 14 November 2017. The suspects are believed to have carried out several similar acts of harassment in Teck Whye Lane and Woodlands housing estates.
The three suspects will be charged in court on 15 November 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
