14 men and 1 woman, aged between 30 and 51, were arrested for suspected involvement in gambling activities on 18 November 2017. Of the 15 nabbed, a man was also arrested for an immigration offence.

 

Officers from Bedok Police Division and Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) arrested the 15 suspects, including the tenant of the unit, at a private residential apartment located along Lorong 30 Geylang in a joint operation. Cash amounting to $2302 and gambling paraphernalia were seized. Investigations are ongoing.

 

Commanding Officer of Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre, Superintendent of Police Ben Kwok said: “This joint operation led by Police is an ongoing enforcement effort to clamp down on such illicit activities in Geylang. We will continue to work closely with enforcement counterparts to eradicate criminal activities. Offenders will be dealt with in accordance to the law.”

 

Anyone convicted for the offence of being the owner/occupier and using the place as a common gaming house under Section 4(1) (a) of the Common Gaming House Act, Chapter 49, shall be liable to a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 and imprisonment not exceeding 3 years.  Any person caught gaming in a common gaming house under Section 7 of the Common Gaming House Act (Chapter 49) shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or both.

 

Under the Immigration Act (Chapter 133), the penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to six months plus a minimum of three strokes of the cane, while the penalties for illegal departure is a fine of up to $2,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.
