The Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for his suspected involvement in connection to four cases of loanshark harassment, which were reported between 30 October and 24 November 2017.

Through extensive probes and enquiries, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Ang Mo Kio Police Division and Clementi Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him on 27 November 2017 along Beo Crescent. Following the arrest, items including a power-assisted scooter, two cans of red paint, two mobile phones, one black t-shirt and one pair of grey pants were seized as case exhibits.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have commuted using his power-assisted scooter to commit several cases of loanshark harassment which involved setting of fire, splashing of paint as well as pasting debtors’ notes at debtors’ units islandwide.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 29 November 2017 with loanshark harassment.  Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.

The Police will not hesitate to take tough action against those involved in loansharking activities.
