The Police have arrested three men aged 17, 31 and 60 for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities in two separate cases.

In the first case, on 22 November 2017, the Police received two reports of loanshark harassment which occurred at residential units at Hougang Avenue 10 and Hougang Street 51. Both units were splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti were found written on the wall. Through extensive ground enquiries and investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrested the 17-year-old man along Bedok North Avenue 2 on 7 December 2017. A 31-year-old man was later arrested on the same day along Lorong 6 Toa Payoh. Preliminary investigations revealed that the two men are believed to have assisted unlicensed moneylenders in committing loanshark harassment islandwide.

In the second case, on 2 December 2017, the Police were informed that a debtor’s note had been placed at a residential unit at Bishan Street 23. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Tanglin Police Division established the identity of the 60-year-old man and arrested him along Bishan Street 23 on 8 December 2017.

All three men will be charged in Court on 9 December 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
