The Police have arrested three men, aged between 22 and 32, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities in two separate cases.
For the first case, on 13 January 2018, Police received a report on loanshark harassment where a residential unit at Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4 was splashed with paint and loanshark graffiti were found scrawled on the wall. Through extensive ground enquiries and the viewing of images from Police Cameras, officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the 22-year-old suspect and arrested him near West Coast Highway on 22 January 2018.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the 22-year-old man is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment at Choa Chu Kang and Serangoon housing estates. A haversack, a cap and one mobile phone were seized as case exhibits.
For the second case, on 18 January 2018, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment involving fire at a residential unit located at Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4. Through extensive ground enquiries and the viewing of images from Police Cameras, the identities of the two men, aged 28 and 32, were established and officers from Jurong Police Division arrested them at Lengkok Bahru on 22 January 2018. A sling bag, one jacket and two mobile phones were seized as case exhibits.
The three men will be charged in Court on 24 January 2018 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
