The Police have arrested five men, aged between 27 and 63, for their suspected involvement in a case of Rioting.

 

On 7 March 2018 at about 8 am, the police were informed that there were five men assaulting a man at Orchard Towers taxi stand. Preliminary investigations revealed that the five men had further assaulted another three men who had tried to stop the assault.

 

Officers from Tanglin Police Division arrested the five suspects within the vicinity, and found a kitchen knife on one of them.

 

Four of the suspects arrested will be charged in Court on 9 March 2018 with an offence of Rioting under Section 147 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. One of them will face an additional charge of Possession of Offensive Weapon under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, Chapter 65.

 

Investigations against the last suspect is ongoing. Anyone convicted for the offence of Rioting shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 7 years and shall also be liable to caning. For the offence of Possession of an Offensive Weapon, one shall be punished with an imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 6 strokes.
