The Police have arrested a 24-year-old lorry driver for his suspected involvement in a hit-and-run accident along Ang Mo Kio Street 44.

 

On 25 March 2018 at about 9.13pm, an accident involving a lorry and two cars occurred along Ang Mo Kio Street 44 towards Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10. Following the accident, the 24-year old lorry driver failed to stop his vehicle to render assistance and fled the scene. A 45-year-old car driver was injured and conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

 

Through extensive enquiries, the Traffic Police established the identity of the 24-year-old lorry driver and arrested him on 27 March 2018. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect did not have a driving license and had driven the lorry without the owner’s consent. Investigations are ongoing.

 

The Traffic Police would like to remind motorists who are involved in accidents that they must stop and render necessary assistance such as calling for an ambulance to attend to any injured party.  If the vehicle owner is not present at the scene, the motorist should take reasonable steps to inform the owner of the accident such as leaving a note on the windscreen of the damaged vehicle. Unless the motorist is able to establish contact with the vehicle owner, the motorist should lodge a police report as soon as it is practical to do so within 24 hours. Failure to do so is an offence under Section 84 of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276. If convicted, the offender is liable to a fine not exceeding $3,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months and in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.

 

For the offence of Dangerous Driving under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276, motorists will upon conviction have their driving licence disqualified by the court and shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the motorist will face a fine not exceeding $10,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years, or both.

 

All motorists are urged to drive safely and strictly abide by traffic rules and regulations. The Traffic Police will not hesitate to take firm action those who choose to endanger the safety of other road users.
