The Police have arrested a 39-year-old woman for her suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 3 April 2018 at about 12.45pm, the Police received a report stating that a woman had acted on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, looking for a debtor at his company located along Boon Lay Way, to demand the repayment of his loan. In his absence, the woman allegedly turned to harassing another male office staff and even took photographs of the company premises before leaving.

Through CCTV images and extensive ground enquiries, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her along Jurong West Street 42 within 32 hours of the report.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman also assisted the unlicensed moneylender to print name cards and she is believed to have purchased pre-paid phone cards to facilitate the business of unlicensed  moneylending.

The woman will be charged in court on 6 April 2018 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes. First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the business of unlicensed moneylending may be fined not less than $30,000 and not more $300,000, be imprisoned for a term not exceeding four years and shall also be liable to be punished with caning not more than 6 strokes.
