Man Arrested for Criminal Intimidation by Anonymous Communication

The Police have arrested a 46-year-old man for suspected involvement in a series of cases of criminal intimidation by anonymous communication.

Since 12 April 2018, the Police received several reports that various government establishments, a few hotels and convenience stores in Singapore had received envelopes containing bomb threats. Through extensive ground enquiries and forensic examinations, officers from Bedok Police Division identified the man and arrested him on 13 April 2018. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is suspected to have sent out at least five such envelopes with similar bomb threats, but had no intention or means to carry out his threats. The Police treat all security threats seriously and will not hesitate to take action against anyone who causes public alarm.

The man will be charged in court on 14 April 2018 with criminal intimidation by anonymous communication under Section 507 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces an imprisonment term which may extend to 9 years and shall also be liable to a fine, or with both.
