A 22-year-old man will be charged in court on 16 April 2018, with being a member of an unlawful society under the Societies Act, as well as for committing affray and using criminal force against a public servant under the Penal Code.

On 14 May 2017 at about 4.10am, the suspect was believed to be involved in a fight with another man inside a club located along River Valley Road. When the police officers arrived at scene and engaged the suspect, he was uncooperative and pushed one of the officers on his right shoulder. The suspect also flaunted his secret society affiliation after he was arrested by the Police.

Under Section 14(3) of the Societies Act, Chapter 311, anyone found guilty of being a member of an unlawful society shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term of up to three years or to both.

Under Section 267B of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, anyone found guilty of committing affray shall be liable to an imprisonment term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to $5,000, or to both. The offence of using criminal force against a public servant in the discharge of his duty under Section 353 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 is punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to four years, or with fine, or with both.

The Police will not hesitate to take action against those who choose to be associated with gangs or blatantly disregard the law and harm police officers.
