The Police conducted a three-day operation at multiple locations islandwide from 16 to 18 May 2018, targeting vice and gambling activities along Jalan Besar, Beach Road, Bencoolen Street, Telok Blangah Rise, Jalan Minyak, Owen Road, Hong Kong Street, Topaz Road, Aliwal Street, Trengganu Street, King George’s Ave, Syed Alwi Road, Victoria Street, and Bendemeer Road.
During the operation, officers from the Central Police Division arrested 19 men and 19 women, aged between 21 and 80 for vice, gambling and immigration-related offences.
11 women were arrested for offences under the Women’s Charter. They are believed to have been operating from hotels and rented apartments while residing in Singapore on Employment Passes and Short Term Visit Passes, making use of their stays here to provide paid sexual services.
15 men and seven women were arrested for gambling-related offences and offences under the Remote Gambling Act along King George’s Ave, Telok Blangah Rise, Jalan Minyak, Beach Road and Bendemeer. Cash amounting to about $2,400 were seized.
The remaining four men and one woman were arrested for immigration-related offences and using criminal force against public servant respectively.
Investigations against all suspects are ongoing.
Landlords and hotel owners are to ensure that tenants do not carry out vice activities in their premises. Under the Women’s Charter, unlicensed brothel operators can be given a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or up to five years’ imprisonment. Any person who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of the prostitution of another person can be jailed up to five years and fined up to $10,000.
Under the Common Gaming House Act, any person gaming in any public shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.
The Police will spare no effort and continue to clamp down on vice and criminal activities. Those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
