15 men and eight women, aged between 27 and 41, were arrested during a week-long joint enforcement operation conducted from 21 to 27 May 2018 led by Ang Mo Kio Police Division and supported by Central Narcotics Bureau in Yishun, Ang Mo Kio and Sengkang. During the operation, around 700 persons were checked at more than 70 residential and commercial units.
The eight women were arrested for offences under the Women’s Charter. Preliminary investigations revealed that the women were believed to be advertising sexual services online and operating within residential areas. Cash amounting to S$730 and 10 handphones were seized.
Another 14 men, aged between 23 and 51, were arrested for offences under the Common Gaming House Act. Preliminary investigations revealed that four men were believed to be operating a gambling den while ten other men were believed to be participating in the games.
A 44-year-old man was also arrested for drink-driving at a roadblock.
Investigations are ongoing.
Landlords and hotel owners are to ensure that tenants do not carry out vice activities in their premises. Under the Women’s Charter, unlicensed brothel operators can be given a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or up to five years’ imprisonment. Any person who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of the prostitution of another person can be jailed up to five years and fined up to $10,000.
Under the Common Gaming House Act, any person gaming in any public place shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both. Any person who instigates, promotes or intentionally facilitates public gaming shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.
The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities and those found engaging in such activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
