The Singapore Police Force (SPF) held the Police Day Parade 2018 on Sunday, 3 June 2018 at the Home Team Academy. Led by Parade Commander, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Gregory Tan, a total of 818 participants from the various police divisions, specialist units, Volunteer Special Constabulary, as well as cadets from the National Police Cadet Corps were involved in the parade segment.

Award Presentation

Two prestigious awards, namely the Best Land Division Award and Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit Award were presented during the parade by Mr. K. Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, who graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour.

Best Land Division Competition

The Best Land Division Competition was first introduced in 1996 to honour the Police Land Divisions for outstanding performance. This competition seeks to encourage a culture of healthy competition, greater divisional esprit-de-corps and a heightened sense of mission-mindedness.

The performance of the six land divisions is assessed based on the overall scores collated from a common scorecard, which reflects excellence in a set of performance indicators categorised into the following three areas:
    i) Mission effectiveness
    ii) Efficiency
    iii) Values and readiness

The Central Police Division won the Best Land Division award this year. The division covers Singapore’s financial and business district, and peripheral areas that include low-rise heritage buildings in Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India, and public institutions such as the Parliament House, High Courts and State Courts. Commander of Central Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Arthur Law Kok Leong 刘国良 said: “We are pleasantly surprised and happy to have won this award. It is a result of the resilience and camaraderie demonstrated by officers as well as the strong partnership with the community and stakeholders.”

Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit Competition

The Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit Competition was first introduced in 1997 and aims to accord formal recognition to the Police National Service (PNS) Land Divisions for their outstanding management of PNSmen and to motivate them to strive for continuous National Service (NS) excellence.

Public Transport Security Command (TransCom) won the Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit award this year. The specialist unit fosters strong camaraderie amongst the PNSmen by having them train together before deployment and frequently holds team-bonding activities. Such strong bonds further motivate the NSmen to serve and contribute to the safety and security of their friends and loved ones.  NS Commander, TransCom, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (NS) Jonathan Wan Chee Tong 阮志东 said, “It is a recognition of the efforts of all those who played a part in TransCom – The Regulars, TransCom PNS Branch, NSFs and of course the NSMen! This is the first time a specialist unit has won the honour of being the Best NS Operationally-Ready Unit (BNSORU), and I’m proud of TransCom’s achievement.”

Mass Pipes Performance

The post-parade segment of Police Day Parade 2018 saw the premiere of a mass pipes performance, entitled “The Hundred Pipers”. As part of the Police’s community outreach efforts, the Women Police Pipes and Drums and the Gurkha Contingent Pipes and Drums collaborated with bagpipers and drummers from various communities, such as, the Lion City Pipe Band, the Singapore Pipe Band, the McLion Pipe Band and Christ Church Secondary School. The 100-strong mass pipe band performed a marching display to popular Scottish bagpipe tunes, such as Scotland the Brave, 100 Pipers, Longueval and Chasing Shadows. The highlight of the performance was a solo bagpipe featuring the world renowned bagpiper, Mr. Ronnie Bromhead. This collaboration marked the first ever Mass Pipes performance in Singapore of such magnitude and grandeur.
