The Police have arrested two men, aged 27 and 22, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities in two separate cases. 

In the first case, on 4 June 2018, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment where the gate of a residential unit along Choa Chu Kang North 6 was locked with bicycle lock. A debtor note was also found on the wall. Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the 22-year-old man and arrested him along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1 on 5 June 2018.

In the second case, on 5 June 2018, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment where the gate of a residential unit along Jelapang Road was locked with a bicycle lock. Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the 27-year-old man and arrested him along Ubi Road on the same day. Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to be involved in several other cases of loanshark harassment islandwide.

The men will be charged in court on 7 June 2018 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
