Man Arrested For Attempting To Import Airsoft Guns, Flick Knife And Baton At Woodlands Checkpoint

The Police have arrested a 29-year-old Singaporean man for attempting to import two sets of airsoft guns, a flick knife and a baton at Woodlands checkpoint.

On 2 July 2018, at about 4.30pm, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers directed a Singapore-registered car driven by the man for checks at the Woodlands checkpoint. During the course of checks, officers found two sets of dismantled airsoft guns concealed under the driver’s and front passenger’s seats, as well as in a bag that was placed at the rear passenger’s seat. The flick knife and baton were found in the man’s pocket and in the glove compartment of the car respectively. The man was subsequently placed under arrest for importation of guns without a license under Section 13(1)(b) of the Arms and Explosives Act, carrying a truncheon in a public place under Section 22A(1) Chapter 184 and possession of a scheduled weapon under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, Chapter 65. The case was handed over to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) for investigation.

Through follow-up Police investigation, it was established that two other men aged 27 and 45, were believed to be in possession of similar airsoft guns. In an operation conducted by officers from Jurong Police Division on 3 July 2018, the two men were arrested for possession of guns without a license under Section 13(1)(a) of the Arms and Explosives Act, Chapter 13. Several airsoft pistols, revolvers, projectiles, tactical knives and a pair of handcuffs were seized. Investigations against the men are ongoing.

Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security. The security checks are critical to our nation’s security. The ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands. The same methods of concealment may be used by terrorists to smuggle arms and explosives to carry out attacks in Singapore.
