The Police have arrested a 28-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
On 6 June 2018, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 5 where a packet of hot beverage was hung at the gate and a debtor note was left behind. On the same day, the Police were alerted to another loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Keat Hong Link where a packet of hot beverage was also hung at the gate and a debtor note was left behind. Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him along Woodlands Drive 62 on 11 July 2018. Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to be involved in other loanshark harassment cases island wide.
The man will be charged in court on 13 July 2018 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
