Four Members of the Public Presented with Public Spiritedness Award

In a ceremony held at the Public Transport Security Command on 25 July 2018, Mr Leow Fa Dong, Ms Crystal Tan Yi Jing, Mr Song Wei Zong and Mr Justin Law Jieting were commended for their public-spiritedness. With their assistance, the Police have arrested two men aged, 51 and 46 in connection to a case of insulting the modesty of a woman and public nuisance respectively.

In the first case of insulting the modesty of a woman and public nuisance, on 2 July 2018 at about 6.30pm, Ms Tan and Mr Leow were on the escalator at Tampines MRT Station when they noticed the 51-year-old male suspect standing behind the female victim and placing his mobile phone underneath her skirt. Ms Tan then alerted the victim while Mr Leow tried to detain the suspect. However, the suspect was uncooperative. This was when Mr Song who saw the commotion came forward to render his assistance to detain the suspect. Officers from the Public Transport Security Command conducted checks on the suspect and found up-skirt videos in his phone.

In the second case of public nuisance, on 19 July 2018 at about 7.25pm, Mr Law was travelling on the escalator at Marymount MRT Station when he noticed the 46-year-old male suspect standing closely behind the female victim and placing his phone near the victim’s legs. Mr Law informed the victim and detained the suspect. Officers from the Public Transport Security Command conducted checks on the suspect and found up-skirt photos in his phone.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Police Koh Wei Keong, Commander of Public Transport Security Command commended the four members of the public for their courage and civic-mindedness which resulted in the arrests.  AC Koh said, “Commuters are advised to be vigilant to their surroundings when travelling in public transport. Besides being able to prevent themselves from becoming victims of crime, they can also help to keep the public transport system safe by becoming our eyes and ears on the ground. The Police are thankful to the recipients today for their display of public spiritedness. Such acts go a long way to help deter crime on the public transport network.”
