25 women and 9 men, aged between 22 and 74, were arrested in a two-day operation by the Central Police Division which ended on 2 August 2017. The series of raids targeting vice and gambling activities were conducted along Sing Joo Walk, Jalan Besar, Kelantan Lane, Smith Street, Lavender Street, Stamford Road, Middle Road and King George’s Ave.

The 25 women were arrested for offences under the Women’s Charter and Immigration Act. These women are believed to have advertised sexual services online while conducting vice activities at hotels and rented apartments.

Landlords and hotel owners are advised to ensure that tenants do not carry out vice activities in their premises. Unlicensed brothel operators can be given a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or up to five years’ imprisonment. Any person who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of the prostitution of another person can be jailed up to five years and fined up to $10,000.

Separately, the nine men were arrested for suspected involvement in illegal horse betting activities. A total of $2812 in cash were seized.

Under the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker is liable, on conviction, to a fine up to $5,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both. For those found to be involved in bookmaking shall face a fine of between $20,000 and $200,000, and a jail term not more than five years.

The Police will spare no effort in clamping down and taking tough enforcement action against illegal activities. Those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
