The Police have arrested three women, aged between 20 and 23, for their suspected involvement in a series of loanshark harassment that happened in Yishun, Hougang and Bedok.

On 15 October 2018, the Police received a report of loanshark harassment where the main gate and door of a residential unit along Yishun Ring Road was splashed with paint and locked with a bicycle lock. Through ground enquiries, investigations and with the aid of Police Cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division and Bedok Police Division managed to establish the identity of one of the suspects, and arrested her on 18 October 2018. Through further investigations, the two other suspects were subsequently arrested on 19 October 2018.

Two of the women will be charged in court on 20 October 2018 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Police investigations against the remaining suspect are ongoing.

Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes. Those exempted from caning, such as women, may face other penalties in lieu of caning, such as serving additional jail time.
