Man Arrested For Unauthorised Transactions Using Stolen Credit Card

The Police have arrested a 21-year-old man for his suspected involvement in using a stolen credit card to make unauthorised retail purchases amounting to more than $2,000.

On 29 October 2018, the Police received a report from the victim who received a text message from the bank informing her that her credit card was used for a transaction amounting to more than $1,000. Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim lost her credit card and 15 unauthorised transactions were made between 14 and 29 October 2018.

Through extensive follow-up investigations, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the identity of the man and arrested him on 30 October 2018. A gold ring and one box of car accessories which was purchased using the stolen credit card were seized as case exhibits.

Investigations are ongoing. Any person who is convicted of theft in dwelling shall be punished with a jail term which may extend to 7 years or a fine, or with both. If convicted for cheating, he shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years fine, and shall be liable to a fine.

The Police would like to take this opportunity to remind merchants and sales staff to exercise vigilance and adopt correct card acceptance procedures when processing credit card transactions. They should look out for the name and security features on the card face and if they are suspicious, they should contact the processing bank immediately for advice.
