The Police have arrested 19 men and 7 women, aged between 25 to 80, in a two-day operation from 15 to 16 February 2019. The series of raids targeting vice and gambling activities were conducted along Jalan Sultan, Lavender, Cavan Road, Roberts Lane, Maude Road, Geylang Bahru, Upper Cross Street and Keong Saik Road.

Six women were arrested for offences under the Women’s Charter. These women were believed to be offering sexual services and operating from hotels and rented apartments.

19 men and 1 woman were arrested for offences under the Common Gaming Houses Act and Remote Gambling Act. Cash amounting to $2,936.20 were seized.

Investigations are ongoing.

Landlords and hotel owners are advised to ensure that tenants do not carry out vice activities in their premises. Unlicensed brothel operators can be given a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or up to five years’ imprisonment. Any person who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of the prostitution of another person can be jailed up to five years and fined up to $10,000.

Under the Common Gaming House Act, any person found gaming in a public place shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.

Under the Remote Gambling Act 2014, an individual in Singapore who gambles using remote communication and/or using a remote gambling service that is not provided by an exempt operator shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.

Police will continue to clamp down on these criminal activities and those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
