The Police have arrested a 30-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of cheating.

On 27 February 2019 at about 10.35pm, the Police received a report that a Singaporean man was being kidnapped in Vietnam. The man had informed his relatives that he had been kidnapped in Vietnam, and requested that a sum of USD$15,000 be transferred to his bank account, for his release.

Through investigations and with the assistance rendered by the Vietnamese police, it was established that the man was not kidnapped, and was safe and well in Vietnam. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to have staged his own kidnapping, so that his relatives would send money to him. The man was subsequently arrested in Changi Airport, upon his return to Singapore on 20 March 2019 at about 12.05am.

Investigations are ongoing. Any person found guilty of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, shall be punished with an imprisonment term which may extend up to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.
