Man Arrested For Theft From Vehicle And Unauthorised Transactions Using A Stolen Debit Card

The Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of theft from vehicle and unauthorised transactions using a stolen debit card.

On 28 March 2019 at about 9.30pm, the Police received a report that a debit card which was left in the In-Vehicle Unit of a motorcycle parked at Blk 196A Punggol Field multi-storey carpark was stolen and that there was several subsequent unauthorised transactions from the card.

Through ground enquiries and investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 11 April 2019. Cash cards, credit cards and Passion cards, found in his possession, were seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is also believed to be involved in several other theft from vehicle cases in Sengkang, Pasir Ris and Tampines.

The man will be charged in court on 13 April 2019 with theft from vehicle under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted for theft, he shall be liable to an imprisonment term of up to 3 years, or with fine, or with both.

The Police would like to advise all motor vehicle owners to adopt the following precautionary measures:

  • Park in well-lit areas;
  • Install an anti-theft alarm system;
  • Remove cash-cards and other valuables before leaving the vehicle; and
Lock all vehicle doors and wind up all windows when vehicle is parked, even if it is for a short while.
