The Police have arrested a 35-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman for their suspected involvement in series of theft of motorcycles and loanshark harassment.
On 5 April 2019 at about 9.25pm, the Police received a report from a victim informing that his motorcycle was stolen along Bedok Reservoir Road. The missing motorcycle was later recovered at the open car park of Blk 150 Bedok Reservoir Road.
Through ground enquires and with the aid of images from police cameras and CCTVs, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the duo. The man and the woman were subsequently arrested along Tampines Street 72 and Bedok Reservoir Road respectively on 11 April 2019. Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo is believed to be involved in other cases of theft of motorcycles at Bedok Reservoir and Chua Chu Kang.
Further investigations revealed that the woman is also believed to be involved in loanshark harassment activities where paint was splashed on the doors and loanshark-related graffiti were scrawled at two HDB flats located in Bedok Reservoir Road and Yishun. A handphone and marker pen were seized as case exhibits.
The duo will be charged in court on 13 April 2019 with theft of motorcycle under Section 379A of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 7 years and shall also be liable to a fine.
Additionally, the woman will also be charged under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years.
The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance and disruptions to public sense of safety, peace and security will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist the loansharks in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in illegal loansharking activities.
