Commercial Affairs Department Public-Spiritedness Awards Ceremony 2019:  Stakeholders Commended For Partnering Police In The Fight Against Scams

On 6 May 2019, the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) held the Public-Spiritedness Awards Ceremony to recognise organisations and their staff for their effort and vigilance in detecting and preventing scams. The organisations include banks, remittance agencies and commercial enterprises.

A total of 47 individuals from 17 organisations received the Active Interception Award for their public-spiritedness in preventing victims from falling prey to scams. Between 1 January 2018 and 31 March 2019, 87 scams cases were foiled through the intervention of these 47 individuals. The majority of these cases were internet love scams where scammers had befriended victims online and gained their trust, before attempting to defraud them of their money. Together, the award recipients had successfully intercepted more than $1 million of potential losses.

13 organisations received the General Support Award for their support and collaboration with the Police in raising scam awareness such as through displaying anti-scam advisories at their outlets or implementing anti-scam training for their staff.

The Singapore Police Force will continue to work closely with stakeholders to prevent scams as well as educate members of the public on prevailing crime trends. To seek scam-related advice, members of the public may call the anti-scam helpline at 1800-722-6688 or go to www.scamalert.sg.  The public can also join the ‘Let’s Fight Scams’ campaign at www.scamalert.sg/fight by signing up as an advocate to receive alerts on latest scams, and share the advisories with family and friends.
